Losing My Edge (25.07.09)

(If the audio stops playing, press pause and allow some time for the stream to upload.)

This week's guest announcer is Alex Mazonowicz from Asia.

For those of us who couldn't quite get up with it. 50 minutes of songs from the madcap laughterers and hanging heroes of pop.

1) Deutscher Girls, Adam & The Ants, 7", CBS, 1978
Stewart Leslie Goddard, aka, Adam Ant, lost his rag and walked into a boozer in Camden with his dad's WWII starter pistol (having already thrown a car alternator through the window). Apparently, he had become agitated when patrons of the pub derided his appearance. Ridicule is nothing to be scared of, surely.

1) Soul Limbo, Booker T and The MG's, Soul Limbo, Stax, 1968

In the City (30.06.09)

(If the audio stops playing, press pause and allow some time for the stream to upload.)

This week's guest announcer: John Yackley (my brother-in-law).

1) In The City The Jam In The City 1977 Polydor
An obvious choice but a ripping few minutes of power pop. Whatever you think about the yawn-inducing clap-trap he makes now, Weller penned a good tune or two when he was a young man. Do I remember rightly that Hudson made a Weller signature shoe? Shoes just like it go for a few lira off Istiklal.

2) Stopover Bombay Alice Coltrane, Journey in Satchidananda, 1970, Impulse
I can never pronounce the title of the album. This week's programme is no exception.

3) Psychodrama City The Byrds, Fifth Dimension, 1966, CBS
A classic Byrds psyche work-out.

4) Now That Everything's Been Said The City, Now That Everything's Been Said, 1969, Ode
Carole King before Tapestry. Great voice.

5) Aremenia City In the Sky The Who The Who Sell Out 1967 Track
No genocide reference. Actually, what is this song about?

6) City After 3am
Jan Dukes de Grey, Sorcerers, 1969 Decca/Deram/Nova
More obscurantism. Despite what I said on the programme, this band cannot be found on the Legends of a Mind compilation, but it was simultaneously released on Decca Nova and Deram Nova. It has been re-released on Wounded Nurse in 2002.

7) Suffragette City Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, The Rise of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, 1976, RCA
Dynaflex wobble-board copy. Again, I was wrong. Dynaflex was introduced well before the 70s oil crisis. Also, Mrs Johns reminded me the reason why Turkish records in the 70s are so rare was due to the US economic embargo placed on Turkey by the US after the invasion of Cyprus in 1974. The same embargo that produced The Man Who Saved the Earth (Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam). There's a silver lining in every cloud.

8) Sin City ACDC, Power Age, 1978, Atlantic
Another obvious choice but again, a cracking tune.

9) A Sunday in Madrid Robert Wyatt, Shleep, 1997, Rough Trade

10) Copenhagen Scott Walker, Scott 3, 1969, Philips

11) Clash City Rockers The Clash, The Clash, 1979, CBS

12) Electricity Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, Safe As Milk, 1967 Buddah
A bad pun I know, but as promised, a Beefheart tune in every programme. This isn't going to get easier.

13) Hong Kong Garden Siouxsie & The Banshees, 7", 1978, Polydor

14) The Soul City Walk Archie Bell & The Drells, Dance Your Troubles Away , 1976, TSOP

Fallen Out

Merhaba, iyi aksamlar ve hos geldiniz.

Welcome to a new season of Tighten Up and to another few months of half-baked comments and badly researched facts interspersed with the words "fantastic" and "erm".

I'm still flogging the theme horse, but this time around it's looser. Rather than an hour of songs from a genre or period, every tune is feebly linked by it's title or some other weak connection. This week is an hour of songs covered by The Fall.

In 30 years the Fall have covered a bucket-load of covers and this is just a small selection of my favourites. I left out Ghost In My House by R Dean Taylor as I played it last season; I'll probably play it again.

1) Mr. Pharmacist The Other Half, GNP, 1966, reissued on Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968I, Rhino.
(Bend Sinister, 1986)
May contain obscure drug references. Possibly. (This comment is plagiarized from http://www.visi.com/fall/discog/covers.html, as is the whole idea.)

2) I Hate You The Monks, Black Monk Time, Polydor, 1966.
(Extricate, 1990)
If you can get it, there's some brilliant footage of the Monks on YouTube. Not to be confused with the band of the same name who did Nice Legs, Shame About the Face. Also a good tune, despite what Bob Brown says. He's so PC.

3) Popcorn Double Feature The Seachers, 7", Pye , 1967.
(Extricate, 1990)

4) The Legend Of Xanadu Dave, Dee, Dozy, Beeky, Mick and Titch, 7", Fontana, 1968.
The best whip-crack sound on record.
(NME compilation, 1992)

5) Lost In Music Sister Sledge, We Are Family, Atlantic, 1979.
(Infotainment Scam, 1993)

6) War Henry Cow and Slap Happy, In Praise Of Learning, Virgin, 1975.
(Middle Class Revolt, 1994)

7) Junkman Groundhogs, Split, Liberty, 1971
(Middle Class Revolt, 1994)
I was once in a bar listening to Steve Malkmus rattle on to me about The Groundhogs (and how he was pally with Tony McPhee, and the like). Typically, I was drunk and I think I called him a boring twat (or something similar). He didn't seem to notice. But he was dull.

8) Beatle Bones 'n' Smokin' Stones Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, Strictly Personal, Blue Thumb, 1968
(Peel Session, 1996)
They'll be a Beefheart tune in every programme by the way.

9) Jungle Rock, Hank Mizell, 7", Eko, 1958
(Levitate, 1997)

10) I Come And Stand At Every Door The Byrds, Fifth Dimension, CBS, 1966
(Levitate, 1997)

11) This Perfect Day The Saints, 7", EMI, 1977
(Marshall Suite, 1999)

12) The Bourgeois Blues Leadbelly, Midnight Special, Library of Congress, 1938
(Are You Are Missing Winner, 2001)

13) I Can Hear The Grass Grow, The Move, 7", Deram, 1967.
(Fall Heads Roll, 2005)
Re-issued on the masterful Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts From The British Empire And Beyond compilation. I love this tune. RIP Carl Wayne.

14) Coming Down The United States Of America, The United States Of America, CBS, 1968.
(Live, 2006. Mutated into Scenario & Over Over!, Reformation Post TLC, 2007)
Wisely re-issued by CBS as a £6.99 budget disc and not on 180gm virgin vinyl, which is pointless unless you have a very good record player.
